In 2012, Kaleb Weakley, one of the founders of BackCountry Heroes, was injured during his service in Afghanistan. During his recovery, Kaleb had the great benefit of national generosity from many different people and organizations that helped many service members as they adjusted to life post injury, himself included.

The recreational healing gave Kaleb a drive to better himself and a deep desire to give back to others. Kaleb met his wife, Sydney, in 2012 while he was recovering in the hospital. Their romance blossomed as Sydney supported Kaleb through his recovery and endeavors. They eventually married and had two children. In 2016, Kaleb went on a hunt with a nonprofit organization based in Ramona, CA. He enjoyed his time with that organization so much that he began volunteering with them as a hunting guide taking Veterans and Gold Star kids in the back country of San Diego County. Kaleb worked with that organization for over 6 years, but it was always in his mind to start his own nonprofit.

In 2023, while on a family drive through Julian, CA, Kaleb, Sydney and their children were thinking of potential names for a nonprofit. Their seven year old eventually suggested BackCountry Heroes, and Kaleb’s dream became on step closer to reality. With help from Brian Horne, one of the co-founders, Kaleb set in motion the slow process of starting a 501(c)3, with their official status as a nonprofit being granted in August of 2024.

The Board of BackCountry Heroes was created and filled with people from all walks of life, but with a shared love of nature, conservation, and giving back to the community. Together they invite you to be part of their mission to help serve Veterans, First Responders, and their families through the healing power of conservation and the great outdoors.
